Colchester United goalkeeper Kieran O'Hara's own goal helped Newport County into the FA Cup second round.

Newport took the lead in strange fashion when a Mickey Demetriou throw-in was touched into his own net by O'Hara under pressure from Cam Norman.

Another Demetriou throw nearly conjured a second, but James Clarke's backheel was tipped onto the post by O'Hara.

Newport sealed victory when a flowing move saw Will Evans set up Aaron Lewis to bend the ball into the net.

Newport County assistant manager Joe Dunne:

"The key thing in these games is to get through to the next round irrespective sometimes of performance... and we've done it, we're delighted and in the end we did it comfortably.

"It wasn't a classic, it was a bit of a stodgy game at times and to be fair to Colchester they changed their system again and we took a bit of adjusting to that.

"But once we came out for the second half I thought we were really on the front foot and did really well."
