United earned two draws and a victory in their League Cup campaign having made it to the semi-final last season where they were beaten by Chelsea

Manchester United are out of the League Cup despite beating Everton at Leigh Sports Village.

Vilde Boe Risa scored either side of Rachel Williams' poked effort before Jade Moore made it 4-0 inside the first half.

Jess Park and Karen Holmgaard pulled goals back as Everton attempted a comeback in the second half.

Aston Villa have secured Group A's top spot and Manchester United do not have enough points for a runners-up place.

The result is a blow for Marc Skinner's side, who will take on Manchester City on Sunday in the Women's Super League.

They had earned two points so far in the tournament following draws and subsequent penalty shootout losses to Aston Villa and Durham, but with Liverpool second on nine points in Group B, United's points tally is not enough to secure them a runners-up spot.

The competition has five groups, with the winners of each section, along with one best-placed runner-up, advancing to the quarter-finals where they will be joined by Chelsea and Arsenal.

Elsewhere, Manchester City secured a comfortable 2-0 win over Liverpool, their ninth consecutive victory of the season.

Filippa Angeldahl opened the scoring before winger Lauren Hemp returned from a month out with a thigh injury to set up Mary Fowler for the second.

City sit top of Group B with nine points, level with Liverpool but with a game in hand.

City boss Gareth Taylor made nine changes from the side that beat Brighton 3-1 on Sunday in the WSL but gave Hemp 20 minutes at the end of the second half as she looks to gain fitness before the Manchester derby.

Victory for Liverpool would have seen them book their place in the quarter-finals but they must now wait for results from elsewhere to learn their fate.

Meanwhile, Aston Villa scored two goals in two minutes to secure their spot in the last eight with victory over Championship side Sheffield United.

Manchester United loanee Kirsty Hanson headed home her first Villa goal and Kenza Dali doubled the lead before 17-year-old Mia Enderby converted from the spot to claw one back for Sheffield United, who are bottom of Group A after the defeat.
