Luton Town 1-1 Wigan Athletic: Harry Cornick on target as Hatters and Latics draw
- Published
Harry Cornick netted his first goal of the season as Luton had to settle for a replay against fellow Championship side Wigan.
The Latics, who won the FA Cup a decade ago, took an early lead when Tom Naylor stabbed home from close range.
Cornick nodded in a Carlton Morris cross to level in first-half stoppage time and Luton then dominated.
However, Naylor nearly won the tie with a late header that was superbly saved by Ethan Horvath.
Despite going into the game on the back of four successive league defeats, the Latics' high press was largely successful in stifling Luton, who looked bereft of ideas for much of the first half.
The visitors went ahead in the 17th minute when Horvath clawed away Callum Lang's header, but Curtis Tilt sent the loose ball back into the box for the unmarked Naylor to tuck away.
Luton gradually improved and Morris set up Cornick for a curling effort that whistled just wide of the post before the same pair combined to bring their side level in first-half injury time.
This time the Hatters reacted quickly to a Horvath save from Ashley Fletcher and counter-attacked along the left flank, with Morris supplying a cross for Cornick to glance his header across the helpless Ben Amos and in off the post.
Wigan might have responded immediately after the restart, when Fletcher cut the ball across for Lang, but his attempt was off target and the home side began to apply a spell of sustained pressure.
However, the Latics' back line, marshalled efficiently by Jack Whatmough, held firm and Kolo Toure's side created the clearer opportunities in the second period.
Lang's effort was chalked off for a foul on Horvath before substitute Thelo Aasgaard - who scored his side's winner in their 2-1 win against Luton earlier in the season - struck a 20-yarder to force a save from the keeper.
US international Horvath pulled off another vital stop deep into added time, diving to push Naylor's header around the post and ensure a replay.
Luton manager Rob Edwards told BBC Three Counties Radio:
"We paid for a slow start, that was evident. But I thought as the first half went on we got better and we got the goal at a very good time.
"In the second half we were excellent, there was a lot more intensity and we got into a lot of good areas. It was the last bit that was lacking, creating that big, big chance and that's down to us to work on.
"The lads gave absolutely everything and it wasn't to be - but if we don't win, don't lose. Overall we'll take the replay and we have to try and do it up there now.
"It was a phenomenal save from Ethan and we needed him to make that big save. Full credit to him."
