Jim Goodwin: Dundee United appoint ex-Aberdeen and St Mirren manager
- Published
Dundee United have appointed Jim Goodwin as their new manager on a deal until the end of this season.
Goodwin was sacked by Aberdeen, who United host on Saturday, in January after four consecutive defeats.
Ex-Scotland boss Craig Levein was also considered for the position, but the former Hearts boss ruled himself out of a return to Tannadice.
"The sole aim for the remainder of the season is to maintain our Scottish Premiership status," Goodwin said.
"I realise it is a huge task but I wouldn't have taken the job on if I didn't believe in the players, staff and my own abilities to be successful here."
Goodwin replaces Liam Fox, who left United after Saturday's 4-0 loss at Ross County, a sixth consecutive defeat which leaves the club four points adrift at the bottom of the Premiership, albeit with a game in hand.
On Tuesday, United also announced the departure of sporting director Tony Asghar.
Former St Mirren player Goodwin was manager of the Paisley side between 2019 and 2022 following a three-year spell in charge of Alloa Athletic, where he also played.
After three years as St Mirren boss, Goodwin left for Aberdeen in February last year. But the 41-year-old's Pittodrie tenure lasted just 11 months after heavy defeats at Hearts and Hibernian came either side of a shock Scottish Cup exit at the hands of West of Scotland side Darvel.
Goodwin's first game as United boss will come against Aberdeen at Tannadice on Saturday (18:00 GMT).
