Caretaker manager Steven Naismith says negotiations to terminate Robert Snodgrass' contract with Heart of Midlothian are because the midfielder is better "spending time with family".

Naismith has been put in charge for the rest of the season after the sacking of Robbie Neilson on Sunday.

Snodgrass had been a regular starter for Hearts since signing last summer.

"The decision's been made that he's probably not going to get many minutes," Naismith told Hearts TV.

"I've experienced that myself as a player and we had a talk about it."

Snodgrass was sent off in Saturday's 2-0 home defeat by St Mirren, a result quickly followed by Neilson's departure.

Naismith insisted that "I have a good relationship" with his 35-year-old former Scotland team-mate, who signed a one-year contract in September after leaving Luton Town at the end of last season.

"Snoddy's family are still down south and the best outcome for everybody would be that he gets time to spend with his family and I focus on a group that's going to go forward," he said.

The Tynecastle side have lost their five games in all competitions, seeing a healthy lead in third crumble with Hearts slipping to fourth going into this weekend's Edinburgh derby away to Hibernian.
