Plymouth Argyle eased into the second round of the Carabao Cup as last season's League One champions beat League Two winners Leyton Orient 2-0 at Home Park.

Argyle had two goals ruled out for offside while Orient twice hit the woodwork in an exciting first 20 minutes.

But the Pilgrims did not have to wait long to take the lead thanks to Ben Waine's cool finish before the New Zealander got a second 13 minutes later.

Orient contained the hosts in the second half - Argyle's Spanish debutant Julio Pleguezuelo fired a late effort over the bar after a corner fell to him on the edge of the box.

Argyle made 10 changes from the win over Huddersfield Town with debuts for Spanish defender Pleguezuelo and loanees Lewis Warrington and Luke Cundle, as well as first start for 17-year-old Freddie Issaka, who set the record as Argyle's youngest-ever player almost two years ago.

The O's made four changes with Manchester United loanee Ethan Galbraith making his first start for the London side.

Argyle started well as Waine had a seventh-minute goal ruled out for offside before a 16th-minute Finn Azaz effort was chalked off for the same reason.

The O's had not had a chance until an 18th-minute corner was deflected onto the post by Kaine Kesler-Hayden with Omar Beckles crashing the rebound against the bar - efforts which would prove to be their best of the game.

Soon after Beckles was at fault for Argyle's opener as he let in Waine on the corner of the 18-yard box and the New Zealander took one touch before coolly side-footing home.

The former Wellington Phoenix striker bundled in a second from close range after a cross from the impressive Issaka took a deflection.

Orient improved after the break in terms of territory and possession, but never truly troubled the Pilgrims, whose best second-half effort came from their Spanish defender late on.
