Norwich booked their place in round three of the EFL Cup after edging-past Bristol City at Ashton Gate.

Liam Gibbs had already thumped the bar for the visitors when Przemyslaw Płacheta spun in the box and fired into the corner to put the Canaries ahead early in the second half.

The visitors were unable to convert any further chances allowing the Robins to pile on late pressure but the Canaries stood firm to progress.

The third round draw will be made on Wednesday night with ties to take place the week commencing 25 September.

Norwich began the brighter and Adam Idah turned a Placheta cross wide and saw a far-post header superbly tipped over the bar by Max O'Leary, while the Bristol City keeper also stopped a long-range Kellen Fisher drive.

Gabriel Sara curled over the bar and looped a header wide on the half-hour mark, while Nakhi Wells had a rare Robins chance saved by debutant George Long.

After the interval Gibbs hit the bar having been being teed-up by Tony Springett before the visitors took the lead on 49 minutes when the sliding Sam McCallum found Płacheta, who spun his marker and lashed past O'Leary from an angle.

Gibbs was denied by O'Leary and with a slender lead the hosts were able to pile on late pressure, however they could not fashion any clear chances and Norwich registered a third clean sheet in four matches.
