Carabao Cup: Tranmere Rovers 0-2 Leicester City - Jamie Vardy scores as Foxes reach third round

Jamie Vardy's goal was his first since a 2-2 draw for Leicester against Everton on 1 May

Two goals in four second-half minutes allowed Leicester City to overcome Tranmere Rovers and reach the third round of the Carabao Cup.

City had the better of the first-half possession but failed to have an effort on target as Tranmere had a couple of efforts.

Wilfred Ndidi's strike from a difficult angle put the Foxes in front 10 minutes after the break.

Soon after Jamie Vardy got his first goal of the season as he headed home Ndidi's cross at the back post.

Tranmere's 42-year-old goalkeeping coach Joe Murphy donned the gloves as he did in the first round - more than 23 years after he kept goal for Rovers as an 18-year-old in their 2000 League Cup final loss to the Foxes at the old Wembley.

Leicester's Polish goalkeeper Jakub Stolarczyk had to be alert to save from Dan Pike and Josh Hawkes in the opening period while Cesare Casadei twice went close for City after a good early chance for Harry Winks.

Leicester had further chances to extend their lead after going in front as substitutes Wanya Marcal-Madivadua and Ndidi had efforts blocked with 10 minutes to go while Casadei also went close.

Tranmere struggled to create chances as Jordan Turnbull did well to deny Yunus Akgun a goal late on before Rovers substitute Reece McAlear had a late shot blocked.
