Mansfield beat League One Peterborough on penalties to reach the fourth round of the EFL Cup for only the second time in their history.

Ex-Posh goalkeeper Christy Pym saved efforts from Jonson Clarke Harris and Ronnie Edwards to set it up for Davis Keillor-Dunn to smash home the winner.

The League Two team took the lead after just five minutes when Will Swan calmly clipped a penalty down the middle after he had been felled in the area.

Clarke-Harris levelled for the Posh with a firmly hit free-kick which bounced just in front of Pym, and the striker then tapped in a second after the break to give the visitors the lead.

But Lucas Akins' injury-time penalty sent the tie to spot kicks, where the home side held their nerve.

Mansfield who are unbeaten in all competitions this season, are now in the draw for the fourth round of the Carabao Cup for the first time since 1975.

They responded well to going 2-1 behind just after the restart and should have levelled when Calum Macdonald somehow conspired to head Hiram Boateng's deflected cross over the bar from almost on the goal-line when the ball looked to be heading in before his intervention.

Akins saw an effort ruled out for offside before the veteran calmly slotted home his side's second penalty of the night after a foul by Clarke-Harris in the area.

Mansfield took a 2-0 lead in the shoot out thanks to Akins and Jordan Bowery but Aden Flint missed the chance to win it when he thumped his effort against the crossbar.

Peterborough goalkeeper Nicholas Bilokapic then saved Ollie Clarke's effort as it looked like Posh might produce a comeback, but Josh Knight's effort hit the outside of the post and Keillor-Dunn won it for Nigel Clough's men.
