Scotland: Kieran Tierney & Elliot Anderson omitted from squad for Spain match

Elliot Anderson has "a big decision to make" about his international future, says Scotland manager Steve Clarke after the the midfielder and defender Kieran Tierney were omitted from the squad for this month's match in Spain.

Newcastle's Anderson, 20, briefly trained with the squad for last month's games and could yet represent the country of his birth, England.

On-loan Arsenal left-back Tierney, 26, was replaced during the first half of Real Sociedad's win over Athletic Bilbao on Saturday.

"Elliot is a young man making his way in the game," said Clarke, whose side can qualify for Euro 2024 with a point in Seville. "He's got a big decision to make international-wise. So let's just give the boy a little bit of time and space to make that decision.

"He left the last camp and we haven't spoken since. I haven't picked him for this camp. I move on and work with the players I've got.

Clarke indicated Anderson was not in his plans for the Spain trip (12 October) and the friendly away to France (17 October).

And asked if he could see Anderson being involved with Scotland in the future, Clarke replied: "If he doesn't choose England, yes."

Luton forward Jacob Brown replaces Hearts' Lawrence Shankland while Celtic left-back Greg Taylor also returns.

Scott McKenna or the returning Liam Cooper may deputise for Tierney on the left of defence after being named in the squad.

"Always disappointing to lose key players," Clarke said of Tierney.

"Kieran has been excellent for us. First and foremost it is a shame for Kieran. He's got a really good move on loan to Real Sociedad, started really well and picked up what looks like quite a significant injury.

"We will miss him but I know Kieran. He will work as hard as he can to get back as quickly as possible, and we will be there to support him and hopefully we are waiting for him on the other side with some good news."
