Steven Davis says the chance to become Rangers interim manager "was too good an opportunity to turn down" as he vowed to "make the most of it".

Davis took over after Michael Beale's sacking on Sunday just a day on from Rangers' 3-1 home defeat to Aberdeen.

The Northern Irish captain will take his first game in charge away to Aris Limassol in the Europa League on Thursday.

"The call came out of the blue," Davis told BBC Scotland.

"I had a few conversations after receiving the offer, but made this decision very quickly.

"I'm honoured that the board had a conversation about me, and have put their trust in me to try and do this job.

"I'm going to give it my all to be successful."

Davis, 38, has inherited a group who have endured a turbulent start to their league campaign.

The Ibrox side sit third in the Scottish Premiership, seven points behind league leaders Celtic. Under Beale, they were also dumped out of the Champions League at the play-off round by PSV Eindhoven.

"There have been no conversations in terms of time frame," said Davis, who has played more than 350 games for the Glasgow club. "Obviously I have ambitions, I didn't expect this happen just as soon, but I'm determined to make the most of the opportunity I've been given."

Davis is relishing the opportunity afforded to him, even if it means taking charge of some of his former team-mates.

"I don't see any issues there, I have a lot of respect for everyone in that dressing room, and I think that's reciprocated," he added. "Ultimately, we all want the same thing, we all want to be successful and win games of football on a consistent basis.

"There's a lot of characters within the dressing-room, a lot of leaders in there as well, and everybody knows it's time to step up."
