League One side Oxford United have signed ex-Rangers academy striker Cameron Cooper.

The 18-year-old played for the Scottish Premiership side's development squad last season before being released this summer.

He has been training with the U's for several months since then, and scored in their under-19's match against Brentford on Saturday.

Cooper, a Scotland youth international, previously played for Partick Thistle.

"I'm buzzing," the young striker told the club website., external

"All the boys have been great with me, as well as all the coaches and all the staff.

"I've now got the opportunity to play for Oxford United and when I came down and spoke to Stevie Kinniburgh [Oxford academy manager], it was a bit of a no-brainer for me.

"The way the club wants to move forward, the way they give young boys a chance - it's all you can ask for and now it's up for me to take it."

Oxford are much improved upfront so far this season and have outscored their past five opponents 14 to 2.

Kinniburgh says Cooper will add to their academy attacking ranks.

"Cameron is a player who I have known about for a while and when I heard there was an opportunity to talk to him I was delighted," the U's academy boss said.

"Seeing him in our environment over the past few months and seeing how quickly he has adapted to a new team has been exciting.

"I am looking forward to seeing him pull on the yellow jersey in the future."
