England Under-21s: Who are the Three Lions' next generation of stars?
- Published
Starlets from Borussia Dortmund and Juventus, a Premier League regular and a Treble winner - the future for England looks to be in safe hands.
England Under-21s won the European Championship for the first time in almost 40 years in the summer and are already looking to the next generation to help the defence of their title.
After starting their campaign with a 3-0 victory away to Luxembourg, Lee Carsley's side play a UEFA Euro qualifier at home for the first time since lifting the trophy against Serbia in Nottingham on Thursday.
There has been a huge amount of change in the squad with 15 of the players who won the competition now too old to play for them, including Morgan Gibbs-White, Curtis Jones and player of the tournament Anthony Gordon.
Carsley has also lost Chelsea defender Levi Colwill, who is now part of the senior squad.
There are still seven members of the squad that won the trophy available, including Harvey Elliott, Noni Madueke and Taylor Harwood-Bellis, and Carsley will expect these players to be a key part of his side as they look to retain the trophy.
He also has Cole Palmer, who is excelling at Chelsea since his £42.5m transfer, James Trafford, who has made a £19m move to Burnley, Liam Delap, who is establishing himself as a number nine in the Championship and Newcastle's Tino Livramento to choose from.
Here are five other players to watch out for, who could have a big impact and possibly be the next breakthrough English stars.
Jamie Bynoe-Gittens, 19, Borussia Dortmund
The winger is already on the same path as Jude Bellingham and Jadon Sancho as he moved from England to sign for Borussia Dortmund in the Bundesliga.
Bynoe-Gittens made his debut at 17 and has impressed during his time there, and recently signing a new contract until 2028.
He has struggled with shoulder problems in recent times but his talent is undoubted. As with all of the young players at big clubs in the European leagues, how much game time he gets will be the challenge and the England U21s side could be a place where he gets a lot of minutes.
He's already had success with England and was part of the side that won the U19 European Championship.
Samuel Iling-Junior, 20, Juventus
Another young player who has gone to Europe to progress their career. Samuel Iling-Junior left Chelsea to join Juventus in 2020 and made his debut for them at 17.
He's already had experience playing in the Champions League and offers Carsley more firepower in the wide areas.
The U21's will hope that his performances during the international break will earn him more game time at his club.
His breakthrough season may come in the second half of this campaign or even the beginning of 2024/25.
Jarrad Branthwaite, 21, Everton
A lot has happened in Jarrad Branthwaite's career in a short period of time.
The centre-back joined Everton from Carlisle before going on loan to PSV Eindhoven, which played a pivotal part in his development. While in Holland, Branthwaite played in the Europa League and featured in Champions League qualifiers.
How well Branthwaite is doing in a struggling Everton side has been noticed and the chance to come and play for England will give him a break from the current stresses at his club.
Branthwaite was part of the U21s squad that won the European Championship in Georgia in the summer and he impressed those high up in the FA with his performance against Germany in the group stages.
The 21-year-old is a 'second year' U21s player and he is expected to form a solid partnership with captain Harwood-Bellis now Colwill has progressed to the senior set up.
Rico Lewis, 18, Manchester City
Rico Lewis is going to be a massive part of how the England U21s side go about qualifying for the Euro tournament and the way they play going forward.
The 18-year-old has been excellent for Manchester City since progressing from the club's academy.
He made his debut for Pep Guardiola's side at 17 years old and was part of the Treble-winning squad last season and lifted the Uefa Super Cup this season.
Lewis has already been talked about by Gareth Southgate and if he cements a regular position at City, it won't be long before he is part of the senior set-up.
Jaden Philogene, 21, Hull City
Jaden Phiolgene is a player who has really impressed the coaching staff in Lee Carsley's team.
He plays as a wide player but it is his intent to run forward and score goals that has caught the eye, alongside his ability to provide assists.
While on the Aston Vila tour of the USA, manager Unai Emery said he was their 'surprise' player.
Since signing for Hull City in the Championship he has scored one goal and registered three assists.
Don't be surprised to see Philogene play a big part in the qualification process for the next European Championship.
