Reading boss Ruben Selles says his players have shown they can play in his system

Reading boss Ruben Selles says his side's playing style is not negotiable despite struggling to get results in League One.

The 23rd-placed Royals have three wins and one draw from 13 games so far this season and have earned just one point from their past six matches.

"We are trying to find ways to control the game," Selles told BBC Radio Berkshire.

"System and players are among the first things we analyse and look at."

The former Southampton manager added: "If there is a problem we will solve that with a change of system."

Reading have been dealing with countless off-field issues to do with wages, spending and ownership for months which has resulted in transfer embargoes and points deductions handed down by the English Football League.

They have already been docked four points this campaign which has left them eight points from safety.

Back-to-back wins against Cheltenham and Stevenage and a narrow loss to Exeter City in August inspired some hope amongst fans.

But results have tailed off since then - one win and a draw - and pressure on the Reading ownership has mounted.

Selles said their lack of results on the pitch were not to do with playing style.

"It is mainly about some of our execution," the 40-year-old added.

"At the moment I think it's more about how we confront the game as a team, we have been expecting things to just come to us.

"We have showed that we can perform under this current system we just need to be more robust, clear with what we do and stick to our game plan."

Style and strategy

The beleaguered Royals face League One leaders Portsmouth at the Select Car Leasing Stadium on Saturday.

Despite pressure mounting on the club to turn things around, Selles is committed to his way of doing things.

"Style is not negotiable," he added.

"What is negotiable is the way that we set-up.

"We can analyse the formation but the style of the team is one that works together, we want to be nasty in those defensive moments and apply pressure.

"But the playing style is going to be here and that is why I was appointed."
