St Johnstone have "parted company" with manager Steven MacLean after St Mirren inflicted their latest dismal result of the season on Saturday.

The Perth club were hammered 4-0 in Paisley to leave them five points adrift at the foot of the Scottish Premiership with no wins.

Former St Johnstone striker MacLean replaced Callum Davidson in April.

"Some of them should be ashamed of their performances," said MacLean after the latest loss.

"St Johnstone Football Club can announce that it has parted company with Steven MacLean and Liam Craig," said a club statement.

"In the interim, Alex Cleland will assume responsibilities for First Team matters."

After taking interim charge in April, MacLean won three crucial post-split games to convince the St Johnstone board to hand him a three-year deal and his first shot at management.

Seventeen players departed in the summer as part of a rebuild, but St Johnstone remain the only team across Scotland's top two divisions who have failed to record a victory this season.

The Perth club have scored just one goal in nearly two months months, with their last victory coming in the Viaplay Cup groups against Alloa Athletic in July.
