Northampton Town manager Jon Brady says they will "let the dust settle" before appointing a new assistant boss.

Colin Calderwood left Sixfields on Monday to become a first-team coach at Championship club Southampton.

Cobblers academy head Ian Sampson will step up as Calderwood's replacement for the time being.

"When I first started this journey, Sammo came and helped me for the first 20 games, I think it was," Brady told BBC Radio Northampton.

"He's back on board and really looking forward to it. Sammo is (part of) the fabric of the club really so he'll give it everything he's got.

"We'll let the dust settle. It's a bit fresh about Col, but this is football. At times, you've got to adjust and adjust quickly."

Northampton are 20th in League One, above the relegation places on goal difference only, ahead of Tuesday's away game at Derby County - the first league meeting between the clubs since 1967.

Northampton have not won any of their last four games, losing three of them, so the departure of the vastly experienced Calderwood is untimely.

"It's bittersweet. Obviously, we've had a great partnership together and I consider Col a really good friend," said Brady.

"You can't deny what a great opportunity it is for him to go and work at Southampton. He goes with our blessing and we wish him all the best.

"I don't want to downplay his role at all. He's a fantastic guy and brilliant at what he did.

"But if you have a structure in place - like we do - it should be seamless for Sammo to step up.

"We've gone through roles and responsibilities and Sammo is chomping at the bit."
