Graham Coughlan's Newport County have won five and lost eight of 16 League Two games this season

Newport County manager Graham Coughlan has a "hit list" of players he would like to recruit in the January transfer window.

The Exiles manager is coping with a lengthy injury list which may force a change of team shape for Saturday's League Two home game with MK Dons.

Newport are also awaiting Football League approval for a takeover by former Swansea chairman Huw Jenkins.

"I have a clear idea of which way I would like to go," said Coughlan.

"I have a short, a medium and a long term plan. I seem to be working off short term planning at this moment in time with the circumstances through injuries, consistency and continuity.

"I have three or four players I would like to bring in, probably the same three or four I wanted to bring in last summer.

"I certainly have a hit list, a number of players I would like to engage with, I would like to sit down with and try to persuade them to play for us at the back end of the season."

Newport are assessing their squad going into the game against MK Dons as Coughlan deals with more fitness worries and contemplates an alteration in team shape.

"The likelihood of having that change up our sleeves is very realistic because of our situation with injuries," he said.

Meanwhile Coughlan's squad could be stretched even further next week through international calls.

Stoke City loanee Matt Baker was named in the Wales under-21 squad for their key European qualifiers against Iceland and Denmark, both at Rodney Parade.

And goalkeeper Nick Townsend has received another international call from Antigua and Barbuda, though he is currently carrying an injury which may prevent him from travelling.

If the duo are absent, they will miss Newport's League Two encounter away to high flying Mansfield Town on Saturday, 18 November.
