New Millwall manager Joe Edwards says the victory in his first match in charge encapsulated why he wanted to join the Championship club.

The Lions won 4-0 at bottom of the table Sheffield Wednesday on Saturday.

It was their first win since 3 October and took them up to 15th in the table going into the international break.

"The reason I was so excited to get this opportunity was, watching from afar, I knew there were good players in there," Edwards told BBC Radio London.

"I knew there was players who could handle the ball and play some good football and we saw that."

Edwards, who has coached England Under-20s as well as at Chelsea and Everton, replaced Gary Rowett as manager at The Den on 6 November.

It is the 37-year-old's first managerial position but he says a whirlwind week did not provide too many surprises on matchday at Hillsborough as the players lived up to his expectations.

"I didn't learn much that I didn't already know but it's a case of seeing it more consistently," he said.

"The basics, some of the leadership in the team, the organisation and their diligence in following a game plan when we are defending and doing all the tough stuff didn't surprise me.

"I know they've got that and I know they've been about that for a long time."
