Arsenal's Fabio Vieira will not play for the Premier League leaders before the new year, says manager Mikel Arteta.

Vieira, 23, missed the Gunners' win at Brentford on Saturday, external through suspension but has now been ruled out "for weeks" after groin surgery.

Arsenal's first Premier League game of 2024 is home to Crystal Palace on 20 January.

They will also play in the FA Cup third round on the weekend of 6 January.

Vieira has featured in eight of Arsenal's 13 league games this season.

Arteta said: "He's been having some discomfort and we tried to have alternative treatment with him, and he wasn't improving so we've sent him to see a specialist and that was to get an operation done in his groin, and we did that yesterday.

"We're expecting him to be out for weeks now. "

Arsenal play French side Lens in the Champions League on Wednesday and need to draw to qualify for the last 16.
