Foxes spread festive cheer at care home

Winger Kasey McAteer says a busy festive schedule is a "massive opportunity" for Leicester City to strengthen their promotion hopes.

City will play three games in the three weeks up to New Year's Day, including a trip to fellow high-flyers Ipswich Town on Boxing Day.

The Foxes sit top of the Championship table, eight points ahead of third-placed Leeds United.

"It's going to be a busy Christmas period for us," McAteer said.

"We just need to make sure we're recovered right, it's a massive opportunity for us to get points on the board.

"The manager has said that in every meeting so we know the importance of the upcoming games and I'm sure the boys are ready to go."

McAteer, who first joined the club as a junior, has made an strong start to the Championship season, scoring five goals in the 14 games he has been involved in.

"I'm loving every minute of it and learning so much as well," the 22-year-old winger told BBC East Midlands Today.

"Being at the top of the table now we're in a good place and, personally, it's just about keep going now.

"I've been at Leicester since the age of eight so it's amazing to keep going everyday, keep driving and hopefully get to where we want to be by the end of the season."

Christmas community visit brings a reunion

While the festive period is among the busiest for Leicester on the pitch, players also become increasingly active with community visits in the lead up to Christmas.

McAteer joined team-mates Danny Ward and Harry Souttar at Graysford Hall care home in the city.

"Coming to speak to people with massive life experience and playing bowls with them is not something you do every day," McAteer said.

Joining the players was Leicester City legend and club ambassador Alan 'The Birch' Birchenall, who had a surreal reunion with former Sheffield United team-mate Gerry Summers.

"It was quite emotional really," said Birchenall.

"Someone asked me If I remembered a guy called Gerry Summers and I said 'of course I do'.

"I was 17 or 18 making my debut [at Sheffield United] and he was there. I remember so vividly him helping me through the match like the good old pros do. And to meet him after all these years is just incredible.

"I've come along to a Christmas do and there's Gerry. And some player he was as well."
