Colchester United's teenage striker Samson Tovide has been ruled out for "two to three months" by injury.

Tovide, 19, tore his left ankle ligaments in a challenge with Crawley's Dion Conroy just after half-time in Saturday's 2-1 home defeat by new boss Matty Etherington's former club.

After breaking through last season, Tovide has scored five times this term, to take his U's career tally to seven.

That came on the back of the boost of a lengthy new contract in August.

A club statement said: "Should everything progress as planned, rehab for Tovide's injury will put him in line for a return to action in February/March 2024."

In the incident where he picked up the injury, Tovide was the player punished - and a free-kick given against him.

Colchester are 22nd in League Two, five points clear of next-to-bottom side Forest Green.
