Newport County boss Graham Coughlan says there has been interest in Welsh striker Will Evans - and other members of his squad - during the January transfer window.

But he insists he wants to build rather than diminish his squad this month.

Former Bala player Evans has netted 15 League Two goals this season.

"We have had one or two inquiries, that is part and parcel of football, not only about Will but about one or two of our players," Coughlan said.

"And I think it's great when clubs phone up about your players and clubs inquire about them. It's part and parcel of the buzz that is kicking about at this football club.

"It's testament to the players and testament to the coaching staff that we are getting phone calls about players. I don't think it will be the last call we get.

"But I am not inclined to sell, not at all."

Coughlan believes interest in former farmer Evans, who has another year on his contract, is inevitable given he is the third highest scorer in the division.

"Players that are playing as well as they are playing for us are going to attract attention," he added.

"The players are flying. They are looking forward to it, looking forward to January, looking forward to the run-in, looking forward to the takeover. They enjoy playing for the football club.

"There is a real good spirit about us as well. And if I use Will as an example, Will drives that.

"He organises our breakfast in the morning and is part and parcel of everything we do and there is a real reluctance to let any of our players go, never mind just Will."

BBC Sport Wales understands the takeover of Newport by former Swansea City chairman Huw Jenkins is expected to be granted English Football League approval soon.

Coughlan says efforts to strengthen his squad this month are not dependent on the takeover.

"If we are going to bring a player in, we are going to bring a player in," he said.

"We are not gong to flood the club with loads of players - I don't think the necessity is there to flood the club."

Coughlan's focus this weekend is the FA Cup third-round home tie with Eastleigh, who are currently 11th in the National League and spearheaded by the fifth tier's 22-goal top scorer Paul McCallum.

"They are free-flowing," Coughlan said. "They have the top striker in the division as well. Every challenge is difficult and every challenge is there to be met and overcome."
