Promotion-chasing Crewe Alexandra are expected to be without captain Luke Offord for the rest of the season with an ankle ligament injury.
The 24-year-old midfielder had to be substituted 29 minutes into Saturday's 0-0 League Two draw at home to Harrogate Town - and now faces surgery.
"It's not good news," said, external Alex boss Lee Bell. "He'll see a specialist and will likely need surgery.
"We thought he might have broken it but he's done severe damage to ligaments."
Bell added: "It's a bitter blow because there hasn't been many better players in this league than Luke Offord this season. He will be a big miss. It looks like he will miss the rest of the season."
Youth product Offord has scored three goals in his 170 appearances for the club.
The Alex currently sit fourth in the League Two table - level on points with third-placed Wrexham, although having played two games more.
