Oxford United boss Des Buckingham has asked supporters to continue to back the team despite a run of poor results.

League One promotion chasing Bolton Wanderers humiliated Buckingham's side 5-0 on Tuesday.

Eighth-placed Oxford, who have won just two of their past 12 games, are a point outside the play-off places with eight matches remaining.

"We have to shake this result off very quickly," Buckingham told BBC Radio Oxford.

"Look at where we are, what we're doing and where we'll be at the end of the season. Stick with us, it's important we stay together."

The U's boss has come under pressure in recent weeks with just one win and three defeats in their past five matches.

They have also only won back-to-back league matches once since the start of November.

Since the start of 2024, United have only won four league games and conceded 25 goals in England's third tier.

Their final eight matches include tough home games against promotion chasing Peterborough and Stevenage.

Opportunities to come

However, relegation battling Port Vale and Fleetwood are still to face Buckingham's side.

The trip to Port Vale is next up and Buckingham feels it is a good opportunity for his team.

"We need to make sure we get everything right for these remaining games," he said.

"We have to get answers for the questions we've been left with from this defeat ahead of Saturday's game."
