Bali Mumba was named Player of the Match in the win at Rotherham United

Bali Mumba says his winning goal against Rotherham United has boosted his confidence as he tries to help Plymouth Argyle beat relegation.

Mumba's first goal in five months saw the Pilgrims win 1-0 at Rotherham.

The victory saw Argyle move four points clear of the relegation places while condemning the bottom-of-the-table Millers to League One next season.

"It feels unbelievable. It's something that I needed, it gives me that little boost of confidence," Mumba said.

"From now on the only way is up and it's forward.

"I'm looking forward to the next couple of games, going into the games with massive confidence and that's what I need," he told BBC Radio Devon.

Having been Argyle's Player's Player of the Season last season, as well as winning the EFL Young Player of the Month award, the 22-year-old has found life more challenging in the Championship.

He scored six goals in his first season, but has only found the net three times this season as he has played a number of different roles from full-back to wide in an attacking three.

Having seen head coach Ian Foster sacked on Monday, Argyle's interim leadership of Neil Dewsnip and Kevin Nancekivell opted for three central defenders and played Mumba in his more familiar role of left wing-back.

"I feel right now that's probably one of the best roles for me," Mumba said of his position at Rotherham.

"The way we played today and the formation, that's Plymouth Argyle's DNA, especially from last season, and I felt like we understand our roles, we understand each other on the pitch and we're all familiar with it, so it was nice to go back to it.

"Whatever position I'm in I just want to help the team and play my part, but I think left wing is where you get the best out of me."

Nancekivell added: "This season he's done great, the goals just haven't flowed for him, but that could be a case for a lot of players and you go through patches like that.

"But one thing about Bali Mumba is he never stops smiling, he never stops working and he's a fantastic lad who's got real potential to keep developing and keep taking the club forward and himself forward."
