Scottish Premiership Picks: Callum McGregor returns, Philippe Clement's task & and top-six battle
- Published
It was meant to be the Scottish Premiership's big finale before the top flight splits into two sections of six.
Instead, following a second postponement of Rangers' visit to Dundee, the top six might not be confirmed until the rearranged fixture, now scheduled for Wednesday.
It means Motherwell and visitors Hibernian both retain hope of overtaking sixth-placed Dundee as they go head to head on Saturday, while Celtic have the chance to move four points clear at the top before Rangers visit Ross County on Sunday.
Here's some of what to look out for over the weekend...
Game of the weekend - Motherwell v Hibernian (Saturday 15:00 BST)
What the latest Dens Park call-off has done is ensure the stakes remain high at Fir Park, where eighth host seventh as both look to stay in the top-six hunt.
Motherwell must beat Hibs and hope sixth-placed Dundee take nothing from their visit to Aberdeen on Saturday or from their eventual meeting with Rangers.
Hibs must take one more point than Dundee manage over their remaining games to leapfrog the Dark Blues in sixth place.
While Motherwell boosted their hopes with a dramatic comeback at Dens Park last weekend, Hibs suffered a dreadful home defeat by St Johnstone to surrender the initiative.
Now the Edinburgh side need to quell renewed disquiet from some fans over head coach Nick Montgomery and hope to end a run of four away games without a victory - and only one win in five overall.
Motherwell need to bring fine away form - they have won three in a row on the road - to Fir Park if they are to end a run of three at home without a victory.
It will be tense and it may well be high-scoring considering the fixture has produced 16 goals in the latest four meetings.
Motherwell are seeking a second top-six finish in three years, while a second failure for Hibs over the same period would heap pressure on Montgomery. It's make-or-break time.
Player to watch - Callum McGregor (Celtic)
It was significant that, when it was suggested in the aftermath of Sunday's 3-3 draw with Rangers that Tomoki Iwata had proved an able deputy, Celtic manager Brendan Rodgers stressed that Callum McGregor is a different type of player who brings greater creativity.
The 30-year-old club captain nevertheless looked short of match fitness as he made a couple of uncharacteristic mistakes in his return from injury as a substitute at Ibrox.
In the Scotland midfielder's absence from the starting XI, Celtic have scored at least three goals in each of their last four games, but two of those were victories over bottom side Livingston and one over lowly St Johnstone.
In all those games, relegation-threatened sides were only subdued late on. Meanwhile, in their first game without their talisman, they were beaten by Heart of Midlothian.
So it is almost certain that McGregor will be on from the start as St Mirren visit on Saturday looking to avoid a fourth consecutive defeat this season against Celtic.
Manager in the spotlight - Philippe Clement (Rangers)
Everything looked to be going swimmingly for Philippe Clement when his Rangers side established a two-point lead over reigning champions Celtic in February.
However, Motherwell's surprise Ibrox victory in March ended an 11-game winning run and, although Celtic themselves slipped up the following day against Hearts, it was a missed opportunity that appears to have allowed an element of fragility to creep back into the Ibrox side.
Clement's side had a game in hand as Celtic came calling on Sunday, but another opportunity was missed to deliver a significant blow to the champions as the Glasgow rivals shared the spoils in a six-goal thriller.
With that game in hand at Dens Park being postponed for a second time in midweek, Rangers could be four points behind Celtic by the time they visit Ross County on Sunday.
Clement must shield his players from all the outside noise and concentrate on their trip to Dingwall. Fortunately for Rangers, the statistics suggest any slip-up there would be a monumental turn-up for the books.
While Clement's side have won their past six Premiership games on the road, Don Cowie's second-bottom hosts have only one victory in their latest six outings.
County have never beaten Rangers in 24 meetings - losing 20 of them - and have lost six in a row against the Glasgow side by an aggregate of 16-3 since a 3-3 draw in 2022.
