Jamie Paterson says the only way to top the feeling of his last-gasp winner for hometown club Coventry City would be to repeat the feat in the play-off final.

The lifelong Sky Blues fan came off the bench to secure a 1-0 win over Portsmouth with his first goal for the club, a fine far-post volley which took City back into the top six with five games remaining.

Paterson has played 42 minutes across five appearances off the Sky Blues bench since signing on a contract until the end of the season in February.

The 33-year-old had been a free agent since leaving Major League Soccer side Charlotte FC in November having previously played for Nottingham Forest, Huddersfield, Bristol City, Derby County and Swansea in an 11-year career in the Championship.

Paterson told BBC Radio CWR: "Scoring a last minute winner for the team you support - I don't think it would ever get better than that, unless it's in the play-off final or something.

"I've bided my time, tried to train as hard as I can to try to get that opportunity. I have come off the bench four times and I haven't even managed to get a shot off so I always had in my head if I have the chance I'm going to put my foot through it, nothing to lose.

"I just tried to connect with it clean, not put too much power, and they can either go out of the stadium or go in.

"I don't really know why I attempted it but it's gone in and that feeling running over to the corner and throwing my shirt... it was all a bit of a blur."

Coventry do not play again until Monday when they travel to Hull City while their play-off rivals are all in action on Saturday.

The Sky Blues cannot fall any further than seventh by the time they kick off at MKM Stadium, and with Paterson's goal preventing a third game without a win, they are firmly back on track.

"I don't want to make it all about me, we won a game, it's three points, it's a last minute goal for the team I support, it's a lovely story, but the lads have grafted there and us subs have to try and come on the pitch and make some sort of impact," Paterson added.

"To score a goal like that pushes us into the next game with a bit of positive energy and obviously the fans go home happy.

"It's probably not going to sink in for a little while."
