Peterborough United boss Luke Williams says they need to get summer signing Declan Frith "up to speed without breaking him" as they look to climb the table in League One.
Posh paid an undisclosed fee to Swiss club FC Thun to bring Frith back to England during the summer transfer window.
But after three early-season appearances, the winger was injured until returning as a substitute against AFC Wimbledon on 8 November.
"We are getting there for sure, we're seeing many more minutes and a higher level of physical output in training," Williams told BBC Radio Cambridgeshire.
"Of course, we have to rein ourselves in to make sure we don't give him too much too soon and lose him again.
"He's doing his bit, we're trying to manage him correctly and we're getting closer to a player that can be more robust and be able to prepare and train in between the games better."
The 23-year-old began his career in the youth set-ups of Chelsea and Aston Villa before joining Thun in the summer of 2024 and helping them win promotion to the Swiss Super League.
Frith signed a three-year contract when he joined Posh and Williams added: "We know we have a really talented player, a good athlete, we just need to help him reach his full potential, if we can.
"The first thing is to make sure he is in a position where he can start a game, and there are no concerns about him starting a game, and then it'll be down to him to force his way in."
Peterborough are next to bottom of League One ahead of Thursday evening's home game against leaders Stockport County (20:00 GMT).
