Cardiff City face an anxious wait to discover how long they will be without Rubin Colwill after the Wales midfielder suffered an ankle injury during Saturday's win at Northampton Town.

Colwill limped off after only 20 minutes and was seen leaving Sixfields on crutches.

Bluebirds boss Brian Barry-Murphy said the problem "looks pretty serious on first glance".

"He damaged his ankle ligaments," Barry-Murphy added.

"I think the nature of the way the injury occurred suggests it won't be a short-term injury."

Colwill, 23, has been an influential figure for Cardiff this season, playing in all 15 league games to date.

Despite his early exit at Northampton, Barry-Murphy's team climbed back to the top of League One thanks to a hard-fought 3-1 victory, with Joel Colwill and Chris Willock scoring either side of an Ethan Wheatley own goal.

Joel Colwill was also forced off after suffering a gash on the knee, though Cardiff are less concerned about his issue.

"I think Rubin will be out for a period for sure. Joel's is a cut so he should be back pretty quickly," Barry-Murphy said.

Cardiff will be back in action when they host Mansfield Town next weekend, with Rubin Colwill set for a scan to ascertain the extent of his problem.
