'Martin has run out of road' - pressure mounts on Rangers boss
Champions League highlights: Club Brugge 6-0 (Agg 9-1) Rangers
- Published
It was another humiliating defeat for Russell Martin's Rangers on Wednesday as they crashed out of the Champions League 9-1 on aggregate, following a 6-0 drubbing in Belgium by Club Brugge.
Martin has won just three of his first 10 matches in charge and the travelling support vented their fury once again as their side were picked apart in ruthless fashion.
The former Southampton boss apologised to the fanbase after the record-equalling European loss on what he described as "probably the toughest night" in his career.
As well as the European disappointment, Rangers trail Celtic by six points in the Premiership before the first Old Firm derby of the season on Sunday and none of Martin's summer signings have been able to hit the ground running.
We asked Rangers fans for their verdict on their team and their manager and they were unanimous in their verdict...
'Martin ripping the heart out of Rangers'
Alan: Russell Martin seems to have lost the dressing room. A team is exactly that - individuals who will fight for the club and each other. Bringing in players is one thing but ensuring they gel is another. Martin is not up to the job I fear.
David: Enough is enough. Time is up for Martin. Others such as Patrick Stewart and Kevin Thelwell have to shoulder responsibility. The Brugge result and performance was inevitable. Thankfully Brugge took their foot off the gas for the majority of the second half. Spineless, gutless, leaderless. I no longer recognise my club and as a supporter for 55 years, I never thought I'd feel this way.
James: Martin's decision to leave all the experienced players on the bench shows he has not got a clue. He has to go!
Peter: Surely the new owners have to realise they got it wrong with appointing Martin. His tactics and team selection will not change and there are too many young players in this team who will take this defeat sorely and might even wreck their progression. The man is ripping the heart out of Rangers and someone needs to throw in the towel. Just look at the stats for goodness sake.
Robert: Martin is not a Rangers manager. The board took the easy option and should have opted for Davide Ancelotti or stuck with Barry Ferguson. The way things are going I dread another hammering on Sunday.
'There was nothing to be proud of tonight' - Martin on 'humiliating' loss to Club Brugge
Steve: Please get Ferguson back as manager. We need a Rangers man back at the reins, someone who feels the pain we all feel.
Anon: This Martin experiment is a huge ego trip for him - his ego is an affront to Rangers and all they stand for. He must do one honourable thing and resign.
James: I believe we are seeing a re-run of Southampton in the Premier League last season. Martin is just not good enough for Rangers. If he persists with his methods I fear Rangers will be candidates for the lower half of the Premiership. Rangers' board must face facts, admit they were wrong about Martin's appointment and wave goodbye to him. Bring back Barry or Steven Gerrard, or both!
Paul: Humiliating, shameful, unacceptable. Only three words, out of many more, to sum up what Rangers have become under Martin. They are a complete shambles. No guts, no pride and tactics that belong in the primary school playground. He has run out of road.

Players 'look and play like schoolboys'
The fans' views on their players, particularly the summer arrivals, was almost as scathing as the criticism for Martin.
Ivie: Sadly the recruitment has been abysmal again and most of these players are not up to it. Leaving out Raskin again suggests to me that not is all well behind the scenes and it's only a matter of time before something has to give because the club as a whole is still in a mess.
Dave: Keep Jack Butland and get rid of all the rest. These players are simply not good enough to wear the blue shirt.
Robert: Some of Martin's signings are questionable. None of them have European experience. They look and play like schoolboys. How long are the new owners going to accept these displays? They are an embarrassing.
Ian: Those players, except Butland, who saved the defeat going into double figures, must give serious consideration to refunding the fans who travelled to Belgium. An absolute disgrace.
Alan: The next Rangers manager has a major problem. There isn't a single signing Martin has made who is any good.
Dobby: Totally embarrassed to be a Rangers supporter. After supporting this club for almost 40 years, I have never seen such a hapless team. Very poor recruitment followed by appalling strategy, total shambles of a team. With each passing season, we are getting worse - the strategy of the club, the recruitment and the poor managerial choices.
Andrew: Three out of the back four are loans. It means next season will be a repeat, with a whole new defence for these qualifiers. No forward planning, inadequate tactics and a massive lack of physicality and passion in the team.
Kevin: There are some very good players at the club being made to either sit on the bench or made to play a baffling system.
Calum: Experienced players have been sidelined for loaned youth who are completely out of their depth. Southampton supporters warned us. Martin must go immediately.
Steven: The club requires not only a new manager but two central defenders, a right-back, left-back, central midfielder and two strikers. The loan deals haven't worked out. The board need to act now and accept they got the wrong man. I would bring in Jose Mourinho or Sean Dyche.
