'It's just the start' - Torquay boss after opening win

Brad Ash's goal ensured Torquay United came back from a goal down to win Paul Wotton's first game in charge

Torquay United manager Paul Wotton says there is more to come from his side after they came from a goal down to beat Enfield Town 2-1 in National League South.

The game was the first for the Gulls since new owners took over in the summer and appointed former Truro City boss Wotton as manager.

Lewis Taffe gave the newly-promoted London side a fourth-minute lead against the former League Two club.

But Matt Carson equalised 12 minutes later before Brad Ash got the winner after half an hour and the Gulls hit the bar in each half.

Wotton took over the Torquay with just one contracted player and has rebuilt a squad on a smaller budget than last season.

The club was taken over by a consortium of local businesspeople after former owner Clarke Osborne took the club into administration after no longer being able to fund it.

"I always say that every signing has an element of risk to it, especially when you make 21," Wotton told BBC Radio Devon.

"But what I will say is that I don't see one bad character in there, they're good honest lads, they're nice lads.

"It's just the start, we've just taken our first steps, we've got a long, long way to go."

The victory was Torquay's first on the opening day of the season since 2020 and came amid new-found optimism among the club's supporters after the change in ownership.

"I think we deserved the 2-1 win, I think anyone who says we didn't I think is a little bit silly," added Wotton.

"It was a tough afternoon because it's red hot, the first game of the season is always strange and they become a little bit of a basketball game which I don't like.

"But overall there's loads to work on, but really pleasing."
