Who will Mourinho's Benfica face in Champions League?

  • Published

Jose Mourinho's first two Champions League matches as Benfica manager involve trips to English sides Chelsea and Newcastle.

Mourinho, 62, was named as Benfica's new manager on Thursday, replacing Bruno Lage less than 48 hours after the Portuguese giants lost their opening Champions League match of the league phase 3-2 at home to Azerbaijan outfit Qarabag.

Mourinho, who guided Chelsea to three of their five Premier League titles, will return to Stamford Bridge on Tuesday, 30 September.

Three weeks later, Benfica return to England for Mourinho's second Champions League match in charge of his new club, this time to take on Newcastle.

Benfica then face tough matches at home to Bayer Leverkusen and Napoli, either side of a trip to Ajax, across November and December.

In Mourinho's side's final two league phase matches of the season, they will face a trip to Italian side Juventus, before a meeting at home against Real Madrid.

Mourinho managed Real Madrid between 2010 and 2013.

If Benfica finish in the top eight of the league phase, they will qualify directly for the last 16.

Should they finish between ninth and 24th, they will play a two-legged knockout play-off round match, in a bid to qualify for the last 16.
