Portsmouth defender Connor Ogilvie believes a statement win against Sheffield United this weekend would "really kickstart" their Championship season.

Pompey are without a win in their opening six games after returning to the second tier of English football for the first time in 12 years and sit 23rd in the table.

Ogilvie believes Portsmouth are "getting there in terms of how we want to play" - but knows the importance of a victory against the Blades at Fratton Park.

"We just need to get that first win and it will be a big win if we can do it," the 28-year-old told BBC Radio Solent.

"You want to get the win as soon as possible. It's obviously been a bit longer than we had hoped but fingers crossed that we can turn it around on Saturday."

By Saturday evening, Portsmouth will have already played all three of the sides relegated from the Premier League, as well as three of last season's top eight in the Championship in a tricky set of opening fixtures.

"Everyone knew it was going to be difficult," Ogilvie said. "We just need to get through this tough time we're having at the minute.

"That's part and parcel of getting promoted. You're in a better league and it's about us now working hard and trying to get that first win will be important."

The left-back admitted it has been "tough" to adjust to the step up in quality from League One but has “full belief I can adapt and do well".

"I've played against some good wingers but I'm just adapting and coming to terms with being in the Championship,” added Ogilvie, who signed a new two-year deal at the club in the summer.

"I think I will get there. The quality of the opponents, they're in the Championship for a reason. Some of them have probably played Premier League football as well.

“But we will be all right, we just need to clean up on a few little things and the results will come."
