There were worrying scenes for Manchester City on Thursday when captain Alex Greenwood was stretched off with what looked like a serious knee injury in the first half of their Champions League game against St Polten.

Greenwood immediately went to the ground and signalled for treatment after an awkward challenge with Melanie Brunnthaler.

The England international covered her face as she was stretchered off at Joie Stadium.

After the game boss Gareth Taylor said he did not yet know the extent of Greenwood's injury.

"Not at this stage," he said. "I turned away because I was frustrated we lost the ball in those areas. It was our own doing. We will just have to assess like with all the many other injuries we have got.

"We have two games to get through [before the winter break], we will check in on Alex and see how she is but it takes a lot for Alex to come off."

On how much Greenwood would be missed if it is a serious injury, he added: "Huge loss. We seem to be losing big players. Miedema, Lauren Hemp, Layzell, Bunny Shaw.

"If it's Alex it is going to make it really difficult for us. But the girls are good in that sense. The recovery levels are good and hopefully now once we get this break we have a little bit of time and don't miss these players for too long."
