Plymouth Argyle head coach Tom Cleverley has hailed the potential of midfielder Seb Campbell after he became the club's youngest goalscorer.

Aged 16 years and 279 days, the debutant scored the Pilgrims' sixth goal in their 6-2 win over Tottenham Hotspur Under-21 in the Vertu Trophy.

He is 37 days younger than Darren Bastow, who set the previous record in 1998.

"He's got big potential, and when you have a debut like that you get real belief and a bit of acceptance from the rest of the players," Cleverley told BBC Radio Devon.

"Seb's an attacking midfielder, I'd say he's an eight or a 10. He came on and replaced Law [McCabe] who was playing a little bit deeper than Seb probably is most effective.

"He had one [moment] just before he scored where he arrives in the box well. He's got great technique, he's got an eye for goal. He's going to be six foot [tall] and quite powerful.

"He's a player I've marked as having huge potential and I'm excited for his future."

Finn has international potential

Also impressing was 17-year-old Tegan Finn, who scored twice in the fixture.

Finn has already impressed for the first team this season having started both Carabao Cup ties and made four league One appearances.

Cleverley said he is closing in on a call-up for England Under-18, and was impressed with how he fared against some of the Premier League club's best young players.

"You approach this game thinking, 'Right, this is the best of London's youngsters' - a big club barring a couple that might be involved with their first team tomorrow -against the best youngsters that we can offer and Tegan's shone tonight.

"So whether that gets him internationally recognised in the next international break we'll wait and see, but in terms of what we have as potential, he's really exciting and he will kick on from this for sure.

"I'm not pressurising anyone into any decisions here, but he's on the radar.

"He was on the long list for the last international break, so the FA are in contact with us about how Tegan's getting on, and it's nice to see that young lads from Argyle have been recognised internationally and tonight will have done himself no harm."
