Two goals from Dion Charles sealed Huddersfield's place in the last 32 of the EFL Trophy as they saw off Mansfield 3-1 in their decisive Northern Group F tie.

Charles gave the Terriers an early lead in bizarre fashion when a clearance from Mansfield's Ryan Sweeney rebounded off him and into the net.

Josh Feeney tapped in from close range to double Huddersfield's advantage and, although Dom Dwyer reduced the deficit early in the second half, Charles headed in Ryan Ledson's cross to wrap up the win late on.

In Northern Group D, Notts County's hopes of progressing came to an end as they went down to a 2-0 defeat at home to Manchester United Under-21s.

Shea Lacey and Jacob Devaney were on target for the visitors, who had lost their first two group matches, either side of half-time at Meadow Lane.

Meanwhile, Jamie Walker scored twice and set up two more goals for Grimsby, who avoided finishing bottom of Northern Group C by overcoming Everton Under-21s 5-3 at Blundell Park.

Clarke Oduor, Zak Gilsenan and Reece Staunton were also on the mark for the Mariners, with Jacob Beaumont-Clark, William Tamen and George Morgan scoring the Everton goals.
