Charlton Athletic striker Matty Godden says players as well as fans are starting to believe in the club's promotion chances this season.

The Addicks are looking to end a five-year stay in League One and sit one place and three points below the play-offs in seventh.

Nathan Jones' side have picked up seven wins in their 15 League One matches in 2025 and, despite being beaten last time out at table toppers Birmingham City, striker Godden believes they are gaining momentum at a good time.

"The run we've been on has been unbelievable since the middle of December, we've two defeats in 10 or 11 [games], with a lot of wins in there as well so the place is still upbeat," the 33-year-old told BBC Radio London.

"We've still got 15 games, it's a lot of football to be played, there's going to be points dropped, points gained, there's going to be teams going on runs but we've picked up some momentum at a good time and we all know what momentum can do.

"We've started to see the change now, I think fans are starting to believe as much as we are that we can achieve something this year and I think that's important."

Godden has scored 13 goals in all competitions since moving to The Valley from Coventry City in the summer and is on a run of five goals in eight games.

The forward scored 50 goals in five seasons for the Sky Blues, winning promotion to the Championship at the end of the curtailed 2019-20 season.

He scored 14 in League One in that title-winning season, including back-to-back hat-tricks in wins at Wycombe Wanderers and Tranmere Rovers, and was part of the squad that almost pulled off a massive shock against Manchester United in an epic FA Cup semi-final last season.

"What we achieved there was unbelievable and I know we're capable of that at Charlton," Godden said.

"It's something that I wanted to be a part of - another project and journey - and try and replicate what happened at Coventry with Charlton.

"I don't want to go somewhere that's just happy where they are, I know Charlton should be playing at the step above."

Godden began his career at Scunthorpe United but is originally from Kent, close to south east London-based Charlton.

He has a lot of friends who support the club, including a neighbour who gives him lifts back from home games.

"That's another reason for wanting to come here is wanting to achieve something at a club that you're close to," said.

"There's no getting away from it, so I just try to put smiles on faces and that's what it's all about."

And the ultimate goal for the season - promotion?

"I think it has to be everyone's aim regardless of where you are or who you play for," Godden added.

"If you're not wanting to achieve something in the season you're probably in the wrong sport."
