Wales Under-21s head coach Matty Jones has signed a new two-year contract extension to remain in the role until 2028.

The 43-year-old was first appointed in September 2022, and has led Wales through a successful 2025 European Under-21 Championship qualification campaign to date.

Jones has handed Wales Under-21 debuts to 31 players since taking charge, with the likes of Joe Low, Charlie Savage, Fin Stevens, Charlie Crew and Lewis Koumas all progressing into the senior side.

“It’s an honour as under-21s head coach to have received recognition with a contract extension," said Jones.

"It’s been a collective effort from all the staff who have provided the very best for our players to perform and execute throughout the campaign.

“To commit to Welsh football for another two years is exciting for me and my family as they have also been a huge contribution and help in my role and I love them for that.

"They have allowed me to go above and beyond in something I am passionate about.”

With two games remaining in their current qualification campaign, Wales still have the opportunity to seal at least a play-off place to next year's competition in Slovakia.

Wales sit second in Group I, having won three, drawn two and lost one of their six games so far.

The Football Association of Wales' Chief Football Officer, David Adams, said: "We are delighted that Matty has agreed to sign a contract extension to continue his role as head coach until 2028.

"He has already achieved a number of impressive results in his first qualifying campaign in charge and put the team in a good position heading into the final two games.

"This extension will enable us to continue our alignment and progression of players into our senior team for years to come.”

Wales face Iceland in Reykjavik on 10 September before finishing the group stage of qualifying at home against Czech Republic on 11 October.
