Veteran striker David McGoldrick scored a hat-trick for Barnsley as they beat Manchester United U21s 5-2 in the Vertu Trophy, while Stevenage beat Crystal Palace U21s by the same scoreline.
Barnet, meanwhile, beat Cambridge United 3-2 to go top of Southern Group H in the night's other game.
Alex Revell's Stevenage side have won all three of their EFL Trophy matches this season and are second in League One, one point behind leaders Cardiff City with a game in hand.
Lewis Orford twice set up Phoenix Patterson before scoring Boro's fifth of the game at Lamex Stadium.
