McGoldrick hits hat-trick in Barnsley EFL Trophy win

David McGoldrick has scored five goals in 11 appearances since joining Barnsley from Notts County in the summer

Veteran striker David McGoldrick scored a hat-trick for Barnsley as they beat Manchester United U21s 5-2 in the Vertu Trophy, while Stevenage beat Crystal Palace U21s by the same scoreline.

Barnet, meanwhile, beat Cambridge United 3-2 to go top of Southern Group H in the night's other game.

Alex Revell's Stevenage side have won all three of their EFL Trophy matches this season and are second in League One, one point behind leaders Cardiff City with a game in hand.

Lewis Orford twice set up Phoenix Patterson before scoring Boro's fifth of the game at Lamex Stadium.

Harry Lee's own goal had given the hosts the lead before Jovan Malcolm doubled the lead on 24 minutes.

George King and Kaden Rodney replied for Palace, with Patterson scoring either side before Orford rounded off the scoring in added time.

McGoldrick, 37, scored his first Barnsley goals since August, with Neil Farrugia and Jon Russell also on target for the Tykes at Oakwell.

Barnet fought back from 2-1 down to beat Cambridge.

Lee Ndlovu gave the Bees the lead before an Oliver Hawkins own goal and a strike from Elias Kachunga put the U's in front.

Britt Assombalonga levelled the score on his Barnet debut, with Emmanuel Osadebe netting in the 90th minute to win the game for Dean Brennan's side.
