Fleetwood Town captain Brendan Wiredu has credited Charlie Adam for bringing a "feel good factor" back to the club.

Former Rangers and Liverpool midfielder Adam was appointed Cods head coach in December last year replacing the sacked Lee Johnson who left the club in 20th in League One.

Despite Adam being unable to save Fleetwood from relegation last season, Wiredu told BBC Sport Lancashire the ex-Scotland international has drastically improved the atmosphere at Highbury.

"There's a lot down to him," said Wiredu, who was made club captain by Adam, 38, in January.

"He came in when we were in a difficult spot. He's changed quite a lot and I think you can see the rewards out on the pitch."

Fleetwood have picked up five points in the first four games of the League Two season with a win over Grimsby, draws against Notts County and Gillingham, before losing 1-0 to Grimsby.

"You can see there's a structure within our play, everyone knows what their doing and we're playing together," Wiredu, 24, said.

Fleetwood signed Wiredu in July 2022 for an undisclosed fee from Colchester United and the London-born midfielder was rumoured to be ending his stay at the Lancashire side this summer.

Despite no exit materialising, Wiredu said it had been a "stressful" period.

"It's not under my control what teams put down and what teams don't put down," he said when asked about the transfer window.

"I'd be lying if I said it wasn't a stressful couple of weeks but I just leave it to everyone.

"At the end of the day, I'm club captain and I've got to lead by example," he added.

Wiredu and Fleetwood return to League Two action on Saturday, following the two-week international break, when they go to third-from-bottom Carlisle.
