Republic of Ireland defender Dara O'Shea believes "there are lessons to be learned" from their performance in the 1-0 defeat away to Portugal last month as they prepare for the return fixture at the Aviva Stadium on Thursday.
Portugal are five points clear at the top of Group F, with the the Republic of Ireland one point behind Hungary in the battle for the second place which would secure a place in the World Cup play-offs in March.
Hungary play away to Armenia at 17:00 GMT on Thursday, with the Republic's meeting with Portugal kicking off later at 19:45.
A Hungary win would pile pressure on the Republic, who may need to beat Portugal to stay in the hunt before Sunday's finale in Budapest.
In last month's reverse fixture in Lisbon, the Irish managed to frustrate Portugal before a Ruben Neves injury-time header snatched a 1-0 win for the hosts.
"I think there's a lot of confidence to take from it, first and foremost. To keep out a side as good as them and that as much quality as they have for that long is obviously promising, and we can take a lot of confidence from that," O'Shea said.
"Obviously, there are lessons to be learned from that game too, which we've got to learn from to get that complete performance, hopefully against them. It was a tough game away from home."
The Ipswich captain is hoping for another resilient defensive performance from his side, as was the case in Lisbon when Caoimhin Kelleher saved a second-half penalty from Cristiano Ronaldo before Neves headed home in the 91st minute.
"We frustrated them a lot, and it showed. You could see their players were getting frustrated by how we kept them out. I think we're going to have to do lots of the same again. It's going to be a different game at the Aviva, with our fans there backing us.
"Hopefully, now we can create an atmosphere that's really difficult for them, and we can obviously show our qualities too and get on the right end of the result."
