Bell: ‘We got what we deserved’

Crewe Alexandra boss Lee Bell has called on his players to take responsibility after conceding two "awful" goals in Saturday's League Two defeat by Cambridge.

Alex had led the game going into the final eight minutes, but Bell conceded that Cambridge were "worthy winners" and could have scored more goals.

Emre Tezgel put Crewe ahead early in the second half, but the U's soon resumed control, equalising through Mamadou Jobe before Ben Knight's penalty won it seven minutes into stoppage time.

"The two goals we conceded were absolutely awful and it's going to be an Achilles heel if we can't stop crosses coming into the box and if we can't dominate the box," Bell told BBC Radio Stoke.

"I'm extremely disappointed with the performance, but particularly the way in which we conceded those two goals."

Saturday's defeat followed back-to-back draws with Oldham and Chesterfield and dropped Crewe down to 11th, albeit just two points outside the play-off spots.

They have shipped five goals in two games, following the 3-3 draw with the Spireites, and Bell believes his players must take ownership for conceding soft goals.

"I'll say we keep on working on the training ground as you know, the answer that everybody gives, but it comes down to some shouldering responsibility as well," he said.

"Four lads should be able to deal with a cross that's landed in our six-yard box, three yards out. We should be dealing with that.

"But we continue to work with it. I keep going on about is consistency and I won't stop saying it."
