Newport County are in discussions over fresh investment as they acknowledged supporter concerns over their league position.

The Exiles are bottom of League Two, with fans venting their frustration following last weekend's home defeat by fellow strugglers Cheltenham Town.

Former Newport defender Jason Perry is among ex-players and pundits who have criticised the club.

Fans have also directed anger at players and chairman Huw Jenkins with Dave Hughes' side winning just two of 13 league games so far this season.

In a statement, external from majority owner Jenkins as well as Andrew Bartlett and Mike Everett – the Supporters Trust representatives on the board – the directors accepted fans' dissatisfaction.

"We want to acknowledge the level of concern, frustration and dissatisfaction that many of you have openly expressed in relation to the results," it read.

"None of us want to be in that position - board members, coaching staff, players, volunteers and, most importantly, you the supporters.

"We assure you that everyone at the club is working tirelessly to turn things around and improve our league position. That hard work and commitment comes in many forms."

That includes talks over new investment following recent approvals to issue more shares.

However, the statement added the discussions were ongoing but had taken longer than anticipated.

Newport said they were keen to boost commercial income and want to increase co-operation with Rodney Parade owners Dragons.

County face 19th-placed Harrogate on Saturday with pressure on Hughes to improve form, although he stressed he did not fear the sack.

"I don't wake up every morning worrying whether I'm going to be here tomorrow," Hughes said after the Cheltenham loss.

"The reality of it is we need to win games and we're not. So whatever decisions there are that people make, they will make them."
