Tranmere Rovers defender Jordan Turnbull believes his side are "a lot more confident" than last season.

Turnbull, speaking before their fixture at Gillingham this weekend, says "spirits are high" after the club's unbeaten start to the League Two season.

"This season we're looking a lot more confident," the 29-year-old told BBC Radio Merseyside.

"The start of the season's been fantastic. We're not afraid of going down there to try and win the game."

Nigel Adkins' side grabbed their first away win of the season before the international break with a 2-1 victory at Carlisle following a home win against Walsall and consecutive draws against Notts County and Port Vale.

Five of Rovers' 17 wins in League Two last season came away from Prenton Park but the first did not arrive until December, which Turnbull said was something that had been "touched upon".

"We've got it out of the way now," said the former England Under-20s international.

"The first season I was here, it took a long while to get that away win and last season as well.

"We've got it out of the way and it's something we don't have to think about now."

Rovers go into Saturday's match in 10th place in the table but only two points behind their opponents Gillingham, who sit fourth on 10 points.
