West Ham have announced the signings of midfielders Mateus Fernandes from Southampton and Soungoutou Magassa from AS Monaco.

Portugal Under-21 international Fernandes joined in a deal worth more than £40m and becomes the club's third-biggest signing, behind Sebastien Haller (£45m) and Lucas Paqueta (£51m).

The 21-year-old, who has signed a five-year contract with the Hammers, left Sporting for £15m in 2024 to sign for Southampton, who have made a substantial profit after one year.

He made 46 appearances for Southampton, scoring four goals and providing seven assists.

"I'm very excited to play for West Ham," said Fernandes.

"I think it's a big step for me. It's a big club, a massive club. The project, the stadium, the city, everything."

Magassa, also 21, has joined for a fee of about £17.3m.

The France Under-21 international came through the ranks at Monaco and made 31 appearances in all competitions last season, including seven in the Champions League.

The defensive midfielder was part of the France Olympic side, managed by Thierry Henry, that won silver at the 2024 Paris Games.

"The Premier League is the best league in the world and I'm going to do everything I can to show that I'm up to the task," said Magassa, who can also play in a more advanced midfield role and at centre-back.

The moves should be a boost for under-pressure Hammers manager Graham Potter, whose side have lost their first three matches of the season in all competitions.

They were beaten 3-0 by newly promoted Sunderland in their first Premier League outing before being thrashed 5-1 at home by Chelsea, and lost to Wolves in the second round of the Carabao Cup.

Toulouse's England Under-21 centre-back Charlie Cresswell is among the targets the club are also looking to sign before Monday's transfer deadline.
