Plymouth and Barnsley players clashed soon after a controversial refereeing decision

Plymouth Argyle and Barnsley have been charged by the Football Association in connection with a mass confrontation in their League One match on Saturday.

Players from both sides were involved in an altercation towards the end of the first half at Home Park, where Barnsley went on to win 3-1.

The incident occurred after tempers had been raised following a decision not to award a foul against Barnsley goalkeeper Murphy Cooper.

Cooper raced out of his penalty area and collided with Argyle's Caleb Watts as the pair went for the ball, with replays suggesting it should have been given as a foul.

Soon afterwards, players clashed in the home penalty area following a corner, with Plymouth's Brendan Wiredu and Barnsley's Jack Shepherd being shown yellow cards.

Both clubs have been charged with failing to ensure their players did not behave in a way which was improper and/or provocative.

The clubs have until Monday 11 August to provide a response.
