Stockport County goalkeeper Ben Hinchliffe has been ruled out for about 10 weeks following surgery on a torn abductor muscle.
The 37-year-old suffered the injury in last week's 2-0 win at local rivals Wigan.
Corey Addai will now deputise for the veteran as the Hatters, who are fourth in League One, look to secure successive promotions and reach the Championship.
"Will we see him again this season? It's probably going to be touch and go," boss Dave Challinor told BBC Radio Manchester.
"When he picked up the injury he was adamant he'd be back in two weeks. It's going to be a bit longer than that but he's obviously really motivated to get back as quick as possible.
"In the meantime it re-emphasises the importance and value in terms of going with two number ones.
"You don't ever want to foresee that this might happen but it has and we now go into Saturday's game (against Cambridge) with full confidence in our goalkeeper."
Stockport are six points behind second-placed Wycombe, having played a game more, and seven ahead of seventh-placed Charlton, again having played one more match than the Addicks.
