The FA Cup third-round tie between Everton and Peterborough United will go ahead as planned following a safety meeting.

Given the icy conditions in Liverpool, the club and relevant authorities met to assess the weather and travel conditions at 13:00 GMT on Thursday.

Both clubs have now confirmed that the game at Goodison Park is on.

An Everton statement read: "A safety meeting was held this afternoon to assess the weather and travel conditions for fans attending the tie, which confirmed the game can go ahead.

"Everton staff and a crew from Liverpool City Council's Streetscene Services team have been treating the roads and footpaths around the stadium since the morning to ensure they are as safe as possible for supporters accessing the stadium."

The match will kick off at 19:45 with coverage on BBC iPlayer and the Red Button from 19:35.

Peterborough have already criticised the decision to move the game to a Thursday evening because of the inconvenience it will cause some fans and a late postponement would only have added to their frustration.

A Met Office yellow warning of snow and ice was in place across Merseyside on Thursday morning with another yellow warning of ice from 16:00 until 10:00 on Friday.

The BBC forecasts no further snow for the day while temperatures are also expected to stay above freezing until midnight.

There were similar safety concerns before Liverpool's match against Manchester United on Sunday but the game went ahead as planned.

Meanwhile, the Merseyside derby between Everton and Liverpool was postponed because of the weather conditions caused by Storm Darragh in early December.
