'A bizarre transfer window'

Even by Sheffield Wednesday's standards, this was a bizarre January transfer window.

A highly unnecessary five-hour fans forum on 15 January, hosted by the chairman Dejphon Chansiri, revealed he hadn't spoken to his manager Danny Rohl since the turn of the month.

He also said he hadn't been handed a list of targets by the German, a point contradicted when Rohl stated at his next press conference that targets had been provided during a meeting with head of recruitment Kevin Beadell and club advisor Amadeu Paixao.

There was a disconnect at a time when everyone should've been pulling in the same direction.

The forum ended with the bombshell announcement that Shea Charles was being recalled by Southampton.

Undoubtedly the big positive in the window was reaching a new agreement with the Premier League club to keep Charles at Hillsborough.

It might've been expensive but the midfielder has been a revelation and a joy to watch.

The Owls haven't signed a player of this quality in so long, it would've been a huge blow to lose him. If Wednesday are going to make the top six, they simply had to keep Shea Charles.

Following a meeting between Rohl and Chansiri, finally things started to happen.

Stuart Armstrong and Ibrahim Cissoko were signings hailed by the manager and he thanked the chairman for bringing them to the club.

However, there was genuine hope over the weekend that one or two more additions would be made before the deadline. They didn't materialise.

It leaves Wednesday light at the back, with no defensive additions in particular being seen as a glaring miss by many supporters.

However, look at everything Rohl, his staff and his players have achieved in 16 months.

They pulled off a miraculous great escape last season. Now, despite not having the riches of some of their peers, or the infrastructure and facilities many others boast, they're two points off the top six.

The state of the Hillsborough pitch is awful, because the training ground wasn't available for a 16-day stretch, according to the manager, during recent cold weather.

Unlike Sheffield United, they haven't spent millions in the window. Despite all of this, they're still in contention for the play-offs. It's a massive overachievement, frankly.

Rohl's message is clear and it's one I agree with. He and his players deserve a positive vibe for the last 16 games of the season.

When everyone was pulling in the same direction a year ago, look what happened.

He wants that same feeling around the place now. If the fans can recreate it, who knows what could happen?
