Man Utd's Le Tissier aims to inspire more Guernsey players

Manchester United captain Maya le Tissier hopes she can inspire more players from her home island of Guernsey to make it in professional football.

The 22-year-old was named the new skipper of the WSL club last month, two years after joining from Brighton and Hove Albion.

Le Tissier was born and bred on the Channel Island and has gone on to win four England caps.

"No-one's ever done it before in the women's game, so I thought I'd just be the first one to do it so I can break the path down so they can see that they can," Le Tissier told BBC Radio Guernsey.

"My dad said to me the other day that we've got a couple playing over here now, so that means a lot to me to show them that you can do that and you can get to the top - not to say that I'm there now, but I feel like I'm on the way, so it means a lot to me," added le Tissier, who once played in Guernsey's annual game for the island's Under 16's boys team against rivals Jersey.

"To come from Guernsey, obviously there's not too many opportunities, so if I can just create one or two here and there to give the next generation a bit more support, then I feel like I've done my job."
